Miss WRHS Crowned - This year’s pageant was dedicated to the memory of Joanna McAfee, a 6-year-old girl whose life was taken in late December by a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma. Joanna’s mother, Misty, was a longtime teacher at Warner Robins High School. Turner, a friend of the family, says she can still remember Joanna’s bubbly and bright personality. [more...]

Pageants with a purpose show off young ladies’ compassion - ...“We heard Jeff McAfee talk on the stage and we were all just standing there crying, we were so moved and touched by his little girl’s story,” said Ray. “When we had our next pageant meeting, someone brought up the idea of having a pageant to benefit their foundation; we thought about little girls helping to raise money for a little girl’s foundation.” [more...]

Family that lost child works to help others - It was Mother’s Day, 2004, when 5-year-old Joanna McAfee made her way to the top of a hill at the Cancer Survivor’s Park in Tampa, Fla. It wasn’t easy for her, because she was weak from another round of chemotherapy, but she was determined. When she reached the top, she turned to smile at her parents and hold her arms up triumphantly. Her dad caught the moment with his camera. Group backs Joanna’s Foundation - Jeff McAfee explained to the group how he, his family and others have launched a foundation in memory of his and his wife Misty’s 6-year old daughter, Joanna. Following the talk, the Bonaire-Kathleen team voted unanimously to support the Joanna McAfee Childhood Cancer Foundation. A new name for the team, which is now the Bonaire-Kathleen Connection, was picked.[more...]
